Not all of these movies will actually come to fruition, but it’s clear Warner Bros. has ambitious plans to mine the DC Comics library for years to come. So take a look below.

The Flash

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (2)

Release Date: June 23, 2023

Director:Andy Muschietti

Cast: Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Sasha Calle, Maribel Verdú, and Ron Livingston

What We Know So Far:The Flash movie has had an incredibly long road to finally going into production. Back in April 2015, Phil Lord and Chris Miller were hired to write a story treatment with the hope that they would direct, but the duo departed to take the helm of Solo: A Star Wars Story instead. Ezra Miller remained attached to star, having been cast as The Flash for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and in October 2015 Dark Shadows screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith was hired to write the script and direct. Grahame-Smith was them removed from the project in April 2016, with WB wanting to take the film in a different direction, and Dope helmer Rick Famuyiwa was hired as his replacement. Famuyiwa cast Kiersey Clemons as Iris West and Billy Crudup as Flash's father Harry Allen, but by August 2016, Famuyiwa departed the project over creative differences.

While the film was supposed to start filming in early 2017, Famuyiwa's exit threw a wrench into WB's plans and the studio opted to slow things down while Miller went off to shoot Fantastic Beasts 2. Joby Harold (King Arthur) came on to do a page-one rewrite of the script, and in May 2017 Robert Zemeckis and Matthew Vaughn surfaced as WB's top choices to direct. The studio revealed in July 2017 that the film would be titled Flashpoint, indicating the story will be adapting the famous comics arc that sees Barry going back into the past to save his mother's life, thus creating an alternate timeline. Speculation then began that this Flashpoint twist could allow WB to "fix" some issues in the DCEU by altering the timeline.

At long last, Warner Bros. hired Vacation directors and Spider-Man: Homecoming co-writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldsteinto take the helm in early 2018, based in part on the strength of their Warner Bros. action comedy Game Night. But production was pushed once again, as Ezra Miller was originally due to shoot Fantastic Beasts 3 in Fall/Winter 2019. Filming on The Flash movie couldn't begin before that.

In March 2019, a report surfaced there was creative tension between Miller's vision (darker, gritter) and Daley and Goldstein's vision (lighter, more fun), to the point that Warner Bros. allowed Miller to write a version of the script himself with the help of Grant Morrison to show what his take would look like. The implication was that if Warner Bros. wasn't happy with the script Miller created, he could be out as Flash.

Well cut to July 2019, and Daley and Goldstein voluntarily left the project while IT and Mama filmmaker Andy Muschietti entered negotiations to take over as director—the project's fourth filmmaker in four years. Not only that, but Warner Bros. didn't like Miller's script after all and tossed it, while keeping Miller attached as the lead character. Instead, Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) took on screenplay duties and filming was due to begin in 2020, but was pushed again after the COVID-19 shutdown.

Filming on this potentially cursed project finally began in April 2021. The movie will introduce the multiverse to DC movies and will find Michael Keatonreprising his role as Batman from Tim Burton's film, with Ben Affleckalso returning as Batman. The film will introduce Sasha Calle as Supergirl, and Ron Livingston takes over the role of Barry's father Henry Allen from Billy Crudup, who departed over scheduling conflicts. Although filming wrapped on October 18, 2021, that does not mean that this movie is freed from its production woes.

The release date was pushed, like Aquaman, from 2022 to June 23, 2023, with reportedly around 2,500 visual effects shots that still need to be completed. Additionally, after Miller's run-in with the law multiple times in Hawai'i resulting in his arrest, the future of the actor's fate as the fastest man alive could be at risk.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (4)

Release Date: December 25, 2023

Director: James Wan

Cast: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Pilou Asbæk

What We Know So Far: When Aquaman hit theaters in December 2018, it surprisingly became one of the highest-grossing film of the DCEU thus far, topping out at over $1.1 billion. With that in mind, Warner Bros. set about getting the wheels in motion on a sequel, though director James Wan cautioned that he wouldn't move forward on it until the script was right. Aquaman co-writer (and frequent Wan collaborator) David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick was tasked with writing the screenplay based on a story idea by Jason Momoa himself. The sequel is officially titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Filming began on July 19, 2021. The main cast returns for the movie with new additions like Randall Park, Pilou Asbæk, and Indya Moore joining them for the sequel. Filming officially wrapped on January 12, 2022. Originally meant for a 2022 release, Warner Bros pushed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to December 25, 2023.

Joker: Folie À Deux

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (5)

Release Date: October 4, 2024

Director: Todd Phillips

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey

Even though Todd Phillips' original Joker was meant to be a standalone film, it's no surprise that the film is getting a sequel, considering it made a billion dollars worldwide, was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, and won two, earning the Academy Award for Original Score and awarding Joaquin Phoenix the Best Actor statuette.

Taking place outside the DCEU, Joker: Folie À Deux will see Phillips returning as director, and will reportedly be a movie musical. Considering that Lady Gaga has also reportedly been cast as Harley Quinn makes this certainly one of the most unique-sounding projects DC has ever put together. In addition to the two stars, Zazie Beetz has been confirmed to return for the sequel, with Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland all signing on as well. Also joining the sequel will be Industry's Harry Lawtey, who apparently will have a big role in the film.

Wonder Woman 3

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (6)

Release Date: TBA

Director: Patty Jenkins

Cast: Gal Gadot, Lynda Carter

What We Know So Far: Shortly after the release of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros. announced that they were fast-tracking development of Wonder Woman 3 with Patty Jenkins returning to write and direct and Gal Gadot returning to star. Jenkins has long said she planned a trilogy arc for Gadot's Wonder Woman, and as of November 2021, Gadot revealed that they were still working on the script. As both Jenkins and Gadot are busy with other projects, it's unclear when we'll see a solid release date set for this.

Lynda Carter is also expected to return as Asteria for the movie.

Filming is expected to begin sometime in 2023.

The Batman sequel

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (7)

Release Date: TBD

Director: Matt Reeves

Cast: Robert Pattinson

What We Know So Far: After the wildly popular release of The Batman, this non-DCEU rendition of the dark knight almost immediately spawned several spin-offs and now a sequel. With The Penguin spin-off and an untitled Arkham spin-off series in the works, director Matt Reeves revealed at CinemaCon in April 2022 that he would be back along with Robert Pattinson as Batman for a second movie. With a trilogy in mind, there's a lot of directions the sequel could go, but not much else is known about the sequel yet.

Pattinson and Reeves both have expressed interest in including a Robin into this story, as well as exploring characters like the Court of Owls, Mr. Freeze, Calendar Man, and Hush (who got his own easter egg in the movie).

No other cast has been announced.

Untitled Superman Reboot

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (8)

Release Date: TBD

Director: TBD

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: In March 2021, it was announced that J.J. Abrams would produce a new Superman movie to be written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The film will feature a Black Superman/Black Kal-El for the first time on the big screen, and Warner Bros. plans to hire a Black director.

Although Michael B. Jordan was a favorite to play the role, Jordan announced that he would instead be developing a Val-Zod limited series on HBO Max.

Supergirl

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (9)

Release Date: TBD

Director: TBD

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: It was revealed in August 2018 that Warner Bros. was putting into development a Supergirl movie, with Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox) writing the screenplay. Sasha Calle was cast as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in February 2021, though the character is supposed to first make her appearance in The Flash.

Warner Brothers is searching for a female director.

Black Canary

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (10)

Release Date: TBD

Director: TBD

Cast:Jurnee Smollett

What We Know So Far: After Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey, reports of potential spin-offs and sequels attached to the title were everywhere. However, in August 2021, a Black Canary spin-off was announced to be in development with Jurnee Smollett set to return as Dinah Lance. Misha Green, best known as the showrunner of Lovecraft Country, is set to write the Black Canary movie. The movie will likely be an HBO Max original, however many other projects have moved from streaming to theatrical, so everything is up in the air at the moment.

Static Shock

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (11)

Release Date: TBD

Director: TBD

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: Announced at DC FanDome in 2020, a live-action Static Shock movie is currently in development. Michael B. Jordan and Reginald Hudlin are a part of the production team with Jordan's own production company, Outlier Society, acting as one of the production studios. Randy McKinnon (Grand Army) has been announced as the screenwriter. There is currently no director or lead announced for the film.

Nightwing

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (12)

Release Date: TBA

Director: Chris McKay

Cast: TBA

What We Know So Far: Warner Bros. revealed in February 2017 that The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay had been signed to direct a Nightwing movie with Bill Dubuque (The Judge) writing the screenplay. The filmmaker has teased a "badass action" take on the comics character, who in comics lore is the grown-up alter ego of Dick Grayson aka Robin. McKay has said pre-production could begin in early 2018, but that never happened. Moreover, McKay seems to be hedging his bets in case Nightwing goes south, as he has since signed on to direct various other projects.

In June 2021, McKay stated that the project was being delayed. With DC set on focusing on other projects, this is all up in the air, though McKay is hopeful that perhaps Nightwing will find his home in another universe beyond the DCEU. Given the path of The Batman, never say never.

Blackhawk

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (13)

Release Date: TBD

Director: TBD

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: After directing Ready Player One for Warner Bros., the studio convinced Steven Spielberg to remain in-house—at least potentially—to make his superhero movie debut. The project is Blackhawk based on the DC Comic of the same name which revolved around a team of ace pilots during World War II. To be fair this is less a superhero movie than a comic book movie, and when initially announced, all we know for sure is that Spielberg is going to produce the film with the possibility of directing. David Koepp will be writing the movie. This is very tenuous, as Spielberg has his fingers in a lot of pots at all times, but if the right script comes along he could certainly pull the trigger and get this thing rolling.

Untitled Man of Steel Sequel

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (14)

Release Date: TBA

Director: TBA

Cast: Henry Cavill (?)

What We Know So Far: Instead of crafting a traditional sequel to Man of Steel, Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. opted to expand the DC universe with a follow-up film called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And while a Man of Steel sequel has not officially been announced as on the books, Henry Cavill has expressed interest in doing another solo Superman movie, and we know that Warner Bros. is quietly trying to put one together. Matthew Vaughn, the filmmaker behind Kingsman and Kick Ass, has most recently been in discussions with Warner Bros. about directing what he describes as a colorful and heroic Man of Steel 2, so it's certainly a possibility.

Then all hopes for this movie were dashed in September 2018, when it was reported that Cavill was now out as Superman and Warner Bros. is instead focusing on Supergirl and potentially rebooting the Superman property with a new actor. But with Cavill finally returning to the DCEU, making a quick appearance in 2022's Black Adam, it seems like we might not have seen the last of Cavill's Superman. Whether or not his return means we'll see him Man of Steel 2 or some other project that potentially pits the hero against Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam has yet to be seen.

Untitled Lobo Movie

Here’s a Full List of Upcoming DC Movies: From 'The Batman' to 'Aquaman 2' (15)

Release Date: TBA

Director: TBA

Cast: TBA

What We Know So Far: This project actually precedes the DCEU, as Warner Bros. first started developing a Lobo movie in 2009. Guy Ritchie toyed with the director's chair for a bit, then Brad Peyton (San Andreas) signed on to direct in 2012 with Dwayne Johnson in the running to star. Johnson subsequently jumped ship to play Black Adam in the DCEU instead, and in spring 2016 Pan and Wonder Woman co-writer Jason Fuchs signed on to rewrite the script. This one's still on the backburner at the moment, and Lobo shows up on the Syfy series Krypton, but Michael Bayis reportedly being eyed to direct.

Adam Chitwood and Ross Bonaime also contributed to this article.
