There are more than just basic horses to find in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Wild Horses
Wild horses are the most basic mount in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and can be found fairly early on in Link's adventure. See our How to Tame a Horse page for everything you need to know about these mounts.
Wild Horses are found in many places - from the fields of Central Hyrule, to the grasslands of the Dueling Peak and around Lake Hylia, all the way to the plains in Akkala or the snowy tundras of the Hebra Mountains and beyond. The stats of the horse may improve if you venture into dangerous areas - but you'll never know how good your horse is until you register them. Their stats can be as low as one star or as high as four in any category.
Once registered - wild horses can also have their manes, bridles, and saddles customized by speaking on horseback to the stable attendant looking over the other horses - but only horses you have maxed affection with. You can even find other types of bridles and saddles by undertaking Side Quests and other minigames.
Maxing out bond with your horse is crucial, but taming one in some dangerous areas can be a pain. There is a very easy trick to it. Dismount in a safe zone (so that your horse won't be spooked by a monster popping up) and hold a bunch of apples or any other fruit or vegetables. You even don't need to drop them, the horse will start eating out of your hands. 6 to 10 apples max out the affection, works even with Royal and Giant horses.

Coat colors Wild horses come in a variety of colors, such as three different tones of brown, tan, black, grey and blue. While one-colored horses tend to be the better ones (higher stats), those with spots normally have lower stats, with an exception of the tan and one of the brown coated horses, of which those without spots have lower stats as well.
Epona
Epona is arguably best mount that can be registered in the game, but you won't find the iconic horse anywhere in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
You'll need to employ a special method using the Smash Bros. Series Link Amiibo. Read our guide, How to Get Epona, before you summon Epona if you plan on keeping her around! Being a horse of legend, Epona can't be renamed, and cannot be customized - but she does come with a unique bridle and saddle.

White Horse
This majestic white horse is a descendant of Princess Zelda's horse from 100 years ago. You'll pick up the The Royal White Stallion Side Quest at Outskirt Stable in Central Hyrule, just northwest of The Great Plateau. Talk to the old man 'Toffa right outside who will send you on your way to getting this noble steed.
Follow the path north of the stables, cross the bridge and follow the hills along the river north. The horse is located up the Sanidin Park Ruins not far from the bridge, wandering among the hills -- and takes quite a lot of stamina to tame.
Speak to Toffa again once you have the white stallion in your posession to receive the Royal Saddle and Royal Bridle.
This is arguably the best mount you can get in the game without using an Amiibo, and has even more Stamina than Epona, but less speed.

Giant Horse
Runner up to best mount in the game is the Giant Horse, rumored to be a descendant of Ganondorf's own mighty steed. You'll be able to find this huge mount south of Mount Hylia in the Taobab Grassland, towering over a pack of other wild horses.

It's a huge black horse that may be tough to tame - and what it lacks in overall speed and sprinting stamina it makes up for in charging power - able to mow down almost anything in its path. Be wary - in order to get it out of the grasslands and to the nearest stable - you'll have to plow your way through two different Lynels and a group of mounted Bokoblins.
While the horse can be registered - it's far too big to allow any customization, though it does come with its own unique bridle and saddle.

Bears and Wildlife
Sneak up on a bear, deer, elk, or other wildlife, and you may be surprised to find you can mount them! They can't be registered, but it's pretty funny to see the reactions of the stable-hands when you bring them there. They can also be used as an alternative to horses in a pinch, but they usually have much slower speed and no way to sprint.
If you dismount, they'll be quick to run away, so they aren't the most reliable creatures to use to get around.
Lynel
You probably encountered your first Lynel when collecting Shock Arrows for a certain quest. They're powerful centaur-like beasts armed with formidable arrows, swords, shields and breath weapons. Imagine the surprise when sneaking up to one, you'll have the option to mount it. You can also try shooting one in the face to stun it, or dropping down on your paraglider from above.

If you see the Lynel drop down, you have a short window to try climbing on back.
Unfortunately, you can't exactly "tame" the wild beast - but being an enemy, you can start slashing and stabbing on it so long as your stamina holds out until it can finally buck you off of it.
[[The Lord of the Mountain]
This mysterious, glowing beast appears at the top of Satori Mountain near the cherry blossom whenever it glows green. You can see this mountain from the hills you find the White Horse, and various towers through Hyrule.
This may be a random occurrence and it's incredibly rare - so keep an eye on the mountain for the glowing green vertical beam of light. We recommend you activate Mogg Latan Shrine on Satori Mountain to warp there when you see it.
The Lord of the Mountain will let Link ride it, too, if you're sneaky or fast enough - but be prepared to spend at least two full stamina wheels trying to tame it. We recommend you come prepared with the Sheikah Set and either increased Stamina Vessels or food to give you extra stamina.
Stables won't let you register this ethereal creature, and it will disappear if you spend too much time dismounted from it. So enjoy your new ride while you can.

Even if it can't be stabled - The Lord of the Mountain boasts speed unequaled - and unlimited stamina! That's right, you can press A to sprint all you want and the stamina icons will instantly recharge!
Stalhorse
In areas you find horse-riding Bokoblins, you can also find undead Stalhorses that rise at nightfall - especially in the Northeast region of the Hebra Mountains Tame one of these like you would a normal horse. Again, you can't register them, and they go poof at sunrise, but it's pretty boss to ride a skeleton horse around Hyrule.
